SUMMER WRITING ACTIVITIES

Do you have a desire to strengthen your child’s writing skills, but are a little unsure of how?

Here a few activities you could try at home:

If your child will be in K-3rd grade, why not consider writing a story about a summer vacation or outing? Your child could draw pictures about the event and then add text to share with friends or family members. Another great idea would be to create fill-in-the blank sentences. You could create your own or have them try Mad Libs. There is a great site where you can create printable Mad Libs (https://www.woojr.com/printable-mad-libs-for-kids) or if they are more tech savvy why not try some Mad Libs online? (http://www.glowwordbooks.com/blog/category/kids-online-mad-libs).

If your child is in grades 4-8 you may want to do something a little more challenging, why not consider creating your own word-searches? If doing this via pen and paper seems a bit tedious, you can always go online and create some amazing word-searches to print out there as well. You may also want to consider finding a pen pal program for your child. The following website suggests 8 potential safe sites for kids: https://womanitely.com/websites-international-pen-pals.

Finally for those of you with high school students, why not encourage your child to start their own blog? There are a lot of great sites online which offer advice on how to do this. Brainstorm with them topics of interests or what activities are most popular with kids their age. The following is a great article about starting your own blog in high school: https://blog.collegevine.com/starting-your-own-blog-in-high-school. Why not check it out or suggest to your children that they do?

Hopefully one of these activities will spark their interest and set them on the path to enjoying the many wonders writing has to offer.
